Terms & Conditions for Young Film Critic of the Year

1. The competition is open to all UK residents (including residents of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) aged 4–19 years on the closing date (15 September 2010), except those closely related to a Film Education staff member, an employee of an organisation involved in the marketing and distribution of feature films in the UK, someone currently employed to review feature films, or anyone involved in the competition. Film Education reserves the right to refuse entry to any entrant.

2. Entry to the competition is as per the information provided on the website at www.youngfilmcritic.org and will include either a written review (8-19yrs categories) or drawing/painting (4-7yrs category). All entries must be accompanied by an entry form signed by an adult with some responsibility for the education of the young people entering the competition. This may include a teacher, head teacher, mentor, tutor, youth group leader, parent or guardian.

3. Entries must be submitted no later than 5pm on 15 September 2010. Late or illegible entries will be disqualified. Film Education cannot take any responsibility for any technical failure or malfunction, including but not limited to, any affecting postal services, which may result in any entry being lost or not properly registered or recorded.

4. By submitting an entry for the competition, the adult signing the entry form is deemed to have given consent for the entry to be published free of charge by Film Education in all media, including television and internet, for all purposes as it wishes. Film Education may wish to use these entries to demonstrate outstanding work in a website gallery, press release or the equivalent. Film Education will own all associated copyright to the entries.

5. All entries will be judged in the first instance by members of the Film Education Team. This first judging panel will decide which entries should be put forward to the second stage judging. There will be no more than twenty entries in each age category. These entries will then be submitted to an independent professional panel comprising film journalists, film industry professionals and teachers who will then select a winner and up to 4 nominees in each category.

6. Film Education will pay for the transport of each nominee and up to 3 family members to the awards ceremony at BAFTA. All expenses must be pre-approved by Film Education. Travel is usually limited to a day trip on the least expensive transport available. Overnight expenses will not be paid.

7. Prizes will be announced following the awards ceremony but will usually include free cinema vouchers, DVD/Books vouchers and a free film screening for the school or workshop. The prizes cannot be transferred and there is no cash alternative. In the event of any of the winners being unable to be contacted, after reasonable attempts have been made, or if any is found to be in breach of the rules or fails to take up their prize for any reason, including illness, unavailability, problems with parental approval, failure to provide the organisors with requested materials, Film Education reserves the right to offer the prize to another nominee or to replace one nominee with another prior to the nominees announcement.

8. Film Education’s and the judges’ decision as to the winners is final. No correspondence relating to the competition will be entered into.

9. Telephone calls will be made to the nominees in September. The adult who has signed the entry form will be contacted by phone and email. If there is no response within five working days, the nomination will pass to another nominee. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted.

10. Nominees and/or their school will be expected to take part in publicity about their nomination and the competition. This may include interviews with print journalists, radio interview or TV.

11. Film Education reserves the right to cancel the competition or any of these rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, or if circumstances arise outside of its control.

12. Film Education will only ever use personal details for the purposes of administering this competition, and will not publish them or provide them to anyone without permission.

13. Film Education does not accept any responsibility for the impact of the competition on any of the entrants and their teachers, schools, friends, classmates, families or any other associates.

14. The adult who has signed the entry form accompanying the entry by the young person is deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.

15. These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
