YOUNG FILM CRITIC 2011/2012

Young Film Critic 2011 has now closed for entries. Many thanks to all of you who entered. Judging will take place early next year.

Film Education’s Young Film Critic competition aims to build on the excitement and enjoyment of watching a film on the big screen and develop young people’s ability to reflect and comment on what they watch. To enter, learners must present their response to a film they have seen at the cinema during the last year, either independently or at one of Film Education’s cinema events. Reviews can be submitted in written, filmed, audio or Braille format or, for pupils under the age of 7, presented as a drawn response to the film. Young Film Critic is open to any student aged 4-19 who is resident in Great Britain or Northern Ireland, with four age ranges and matching categories for those with a sensory impairment.

This prestigious competition, which has been running for a number of years, provides teachers with an engaging whole-class activity that is suitable for learners at a range of levels. Working on the competition can help develop learners’ critical responses, as well as their writing or presentation skills depending on the format of the response. The aim is to encourage young people to reflect on their response after a film has finished, and be active participants in and critical commentators on the cinema experience. What’s more, nominees are invited to attend a glitzy awards ceremony at BAFTA in central London.
