Film: In Bruges
'In Bruges' is a memorable film and a really original idea which brings a fresh feel to the dark comedy subgenre. The story of the film is basically n excuse for some mayhem with two hit men, Ray and Ken played by Collin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, told to hide out and keep a low profile in the 'fairy tale' tow of Bruges. However, keeping a low profile isn't on the agenda. Even though the story is quite straightforward, director Martin McDonagh adds a lot of quirky elements into the film.
Throughout the film watching Farrell and Gleeson exchange witty comments was a joy to watch. Farrell plays the character Ray extremely well and brings a cheeky childish quality to the character whilst performing the emotional parts of the film with great tenacity. Gleeson also played a superb role as Ken and worked well with both Farrell and Fiennes. Clemence Posey and Farrell and Gleeson were also fun to watch and had great chemistry between them. Although the banter between Farrell and Gleeson was clever, the introduction of Ralph Fiennes made the film complete and mayhem ensued. With suicides, shootings and backstabbing, this makes for a must see film especially when set in the beautiful town of Bruges. The black humour within the film was particularly memorable, throwing political correctness right out of the window, with fat American tourists and midgets bearing the brunt of the jokes. Altogether the film was refreshing and stands together with out dark comedy greats like 'Fargo' and 'Trainspotting'.
